New on the Market - Just Released!

The Allyn and Bacon Casebook Series features real case stories by seasoned practitioners. All cases were compiled and edited by Jerry L. Johnson, Ph.D and George Grant, Jr, Ph.D. The cases provide intimate glimpses into the thinking and actions of experienced professionals working with individuals and families. This creates an opportunity for students or practitioners to examine the work of others to help them better understand what informs important practice decisions with real clients in real practice settings. The first seven books of the 14 casebook series have just been released. These include Foster Care, Domestic Violence, Adoption, Substance Abuse, Medical Social Work, Mental Health and Community Practice

The remaining seven, scheduled for publication in 2005, will cover School Social Work, Sexual Abuse, Family Preservation, Incarcerated People and Their Families, Rural Social Work, Religion and Spirituality in Practice, and The Elderly. If you are interested in submitting case studies to be considered for publication in this series, contact Dr. Johnson.

Crossing Borders Cronfonting History: Intercultural Adjustment in a Post-Cold War World is a journal based book which describes Dr. Johnson's personal turning point experience during an assignment in the Republic of Armenia on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). His work in Armenia forced an unexpected examination of his own beliefs, attitudes, and worldview. Dr. Johnson kept a lengthy journal that recalls in substantive detail how he reacted and responded to Armenian society during an extremely difficult time in its history. Crossing Borders also provides an in depth look at Armenia after the fall of the Soviet Union and a critical examination of the role of aid workers in foreign cultures.

Fundamentals of Substance Abuse Practice is a college textbook that captures Dr. Johnson's twenty plus years of professional experience in the substance abuse field, along with the accumulated learning gained from being surrounded by interesting and knowledgeable staff, collegues, and, of course, thousands of clients. His goal was to write a textbook that is readable, approachable, and broad in scope and background, while simultaneously providing specific information for use in daily practice. Regardless of whether or not readers intend to specialize in substance abuse practice, most have found that the text covers the field of substance abuse practice in sufficient depth and detail to be helpful.

Current Writing Projects

In addition to the remaining seven books of the Casebook Series, Dr. Johnson is working on two textbooks. Advanced Social Work Practice, a textbook for graduate students will be published in 2006. Substance Abuse Practice with Unique Populations, a follow-up text to Fundamentals of Substance Abuse Practice, will be published in 2007. He is also preparing a booklet on writing for college students.

Fulfilling a desire to write in a different genre, Dr. Johnson is currently researching and writing the story of a triple homicide commited by a seventeen-year-old. This is Dr. Johnson's first true-crime book, scheduled for completion soon.
