Dr. Jerry L. Johnson believes in living life to the fullest and trying to live in a way that
makes the world better for all living things. Professionally, Jerry accomplishes this through his teaching
as a professor of social work, his community development work in third world countries,
and his published works on intercultural adjustment, substance abuse treatment, and a wide range of
social work and mental health subjects. He teaches at Grand Valley State University's beautiful DeVos
Campus in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Living by his creed that one should work harder at "having a life" than at professional pursuits, Jerry's
real passions can be seen on his farm with his wife Cheryl, where his credential of Ph.D really does
stand for 'piled high and deep'. In the midst of his equine family of ten is his pride and joy--his mule Future Hope.
Jerry and Hope compete in the delicate equine sport of dressage, holding their own against horses bred for the discipline.
Becoming known locally as the "muleman," one of Jerry's current projects is training Zelda the Zorse
(half horse, half zebra) to compete in dressage as well. See 'Interests' to learn more.
In addition to his love of horses and all animals, Jerry and his wife Cheryl are avid downhill skiers.
As a young man, Jerry was an accomplished athlete, winning four varsity letters in baseball at Central Michigan University after being
an All-State and All-American baseball player at Flint Northern High School in his hometown of Flint Michigan. Jerry recently began enjoying
playing baseball again with old friends in an "Over 40" baseball league in Flint.
